1. Summary

At Science [&] Technology: Vision B.V. our core business is measuring in photos using markers. With the markers we can measure 3D points in the real world with a few millimeters accuracy. From there on we can process these points and create virtual 3D objects that represent the real objects.

For one of our projects, Markerloos, we created an application on a tablet that takes photos and depth images using the Intel Real Sense. This was created for one of our customers that want to use our technologies to measure staircases and create staircase lifts with it.

2. System

The system is actually an extension to one of our previous applications, PhotoSurvey, that is used to measure staircases and generate a CAD file for a staircase lift rail. It contains a configurator to design the rails and stairs as well.

Before markerloos, the user had to take photos with a camera, copy all the photos to the device and process it. With markerloos, this is not necessary anymore as taking photos is now done on a tablet and integrated in the application. Additionally, when taking photos the application shows cues using AR when it detected a marker, if it has already been in enough photos and the calculated 3D staircase. It also showed the 3D environment acquired from the depth sensor.
